Joaquin Shannon, a fisherman, steps forward to bear the blame for a crime to protect his brother-in-law Chris Nelson, whom he believes accidentally killed Joe Fenderson in a drunken brawl. In truth, Joe died from injuries he sustained during a mugging. The decision seals Joaquin’s fate, and he is sentenced to 10 years in a distant prison. Soapy’s proposition pulls Joaquin into a dangerous scheme: they will smuggle someone out of the country, a person who turns out to be Big Red Kincaid himself, having escaped from prison.

The plan unfolds with pressure and peril as Red and Soapy appear at the boat, forcing Joaquin into the risky role of navigator. The operation spirals toward tragedy and revelation: a dying Soapy, shot by police, manages one last confession to Jean Fenderson, revealing that Red was the one who killed her brother, Joe Fenderson.
