Gat Brady, a racketeer, is on trial for cheating the government. The proceedings reveal a proposed deal with the prosecutor that would assign him a six-month sentence in exchange for a guilty plea, but the judge rejects the plea and instead hands down a five-year term. His girlfriend, Flo Allen, vows to wait for him and to take care of Gat’s daughter, clinging to hope amid the setback. The courtroom atmosphere is tense, with pressure mounting from every side.
Meanwhile, gangland associate Red Carroll abducts the girl for a ransom, a crime that leads to his capture and a sentence to the same prison as Gat Brady. The two convicts clash, and Gat quickly becomes the target of blame for the kidnapping. They are transferred to another facility, where Red Carroll is stabbed and killed with a work knife. Shocking violence erupts behind prison walls, altering the lives of all involved.
Back in the rows and courts, Gat faces a murder trial for Red Carroll’s death. His defender is an unlikely ally—the man in love with Gat’s daughter, described as the “guy from the New York DA’s office.” A fellow inmate—a friend of Gat’s from prison—persuades another con to take credit for the crime, resulting in Gat’s acquittal. Just as the guilty verdict seems certain, the truth surfaces: Gat’s convict friend is in fact an FBI agent who has secured a recording of the killer’s confession made just before the man hanged himself.
