What's After the Movie
Sir Charles Aubrey Smith (21 July 1863 – 20 December 1948) was a quintessential English gentleman whose career spanned both the cricket pitch and the silver screen. Born in London to a medical doctor, Charles John Smith, and Sarah Ann Clode, he received his education at Charterhouse School and St John’s College, Cambridge, where he first displayed his prodigious sporting talent. From 1882 to 1896 he bowled for Sussex, Cambridge University and the West Drayton Cricket Club, earning the nickname “Round the Corner Smith” for his unusual run‑up. His solitary Test appearance for England in 1889 was spectacular: he captained the side and claimed five wickets for nineteen runs, a performance that cemented his reputation as one of the era’s finest amateur bowlers. After a brief sojourn prospecting for gold in South Africa—where a bout of pneumonia mistakenly declared him dead—Smith returned to England, married Isabella Wood in 1896, and began to transition from sport to the stage.
In 1895 Smith made his London stage debut, quickly becoming a favorite for aristocratic and military roles. He crossed the Atlantic in the early 1920s, where his towering 6’2” frame, bushy eyebrows and handlebar moustache made him an instantly recognizable typecast as the dignified officer‑and‑gentleman. Over a prolific film career that lasted until his death, he appeared alongside Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor and Clark Gable in classics such as The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), The Four Feathers (1939), Hitchcock’s Rebecca (1940) and And Then There Were None (1945). He also founded the Hollywood Cricket Club in 1932, gathering expatriate British actors—including David Niven, Laurence Olivier and Leslie Howard—under his enthusiastic leadership, thereby extending his influence beyond cinema into cultural diplomacy. Knighted in 1944 for services to Anglo‑American amity, Sir C Aubrey Smith left a lasting legacy as a bridge between two worlds, passing away of pneumonia in Beverly Hills at the age of 85, with his ashes returned to England to rest beside his mother.
