Gambling Lady 1934

Mike Lee Robert Barrat raises his daughter Lady Lee Barbara Stanwyck to be as honest a gambler as he is. When he sinks too deeply into debt to the underworld syndicate headed by Jim Fallin Arthur Vinton, he chooses suicide over allowing the pressure to push him into running a crooked game. Lady initially goes to work for Fallin, then quits and strikes out on her own when he tries to “help” her by supplying a crooked dealer. The world she’s entering is shadowy and dangerous, yet she clings to a code that she believes keeps her upright, even as the money and influence swirl around her like a dangerous tide.

Longtime admirer and bookie Charlie Lang Pat O’Brien openly pursues her, but it is the persistent young Garry Madison Joel McCrea who wins her heart, even as he inadvertently drags two policemen in disguise to the illicit gambling den where she plays. Lady resists marrying him, fearful of how his high-society father will react, but Garry is delighted to learn that his father, a fellow gambler, already knows and likes her. Yet Peter Madison C. Aubrey Smith disapproves of the match, and tries to buy Lady off. When she refuses his money, but quietly gives up Garry, Peter reassesses his stance and—being a sporting man—offers to settle the matter with a cut of cards for his son. A moment of luck and nerve seals their union: he draws a jack, but Lady reveals a queen, and the couple are married.

Happiness flickers at first, but jealousy soon shadows them. Garry’s old flame, Sheila Aiken Claire Dodd returns from Europe, and he greets her with warmth that stings Lady. In a bid to prove her loyalty, Lady challenges Sheila to a card game and wins her jewelry. When Charlie Lang is arrested, Garry refuses Lady’s plea for ten thousand dollars to bail him out, prompting Lady to pawn Sheila’s jewels to raise the money. Charlie promises to reimburse her, implying that he will pressure the syndicate into paying for his silence. The scandal hits the papers, and Garry’s name is dragged into the mix, fueling Lady’s fear that she has sacrificed everything for nothing. Enraged, Garry heads out to recover the pawn ticket, now in Charlie’s hands, and disappears for the night.

The following day, two policemen inform Lady that Garry has been arrested for Charlie’s murder, having been seen arguing with him and later found in possession of the pawn ticket. Lady discovers that Garry spent the night with Sheila, but she will not use that as an alibi. Sheila testifies only if Lady divorces Garry and awards her a $250,000 alimony; Lady agrees to the terms, torn between protecting her marriage and protecting her own honor. Garry is released and the divorce is granted, and both he and Peter initially believe Lady married him for money. The moment Peter sees her tear up the alimony check, he understands their motives were noble after all. Garry then trickS Sheila into admitting the truth, and the two lovers finally reconcile, moving forward with a renewed sense of trust and shared resolve to face whatever comes next.
