Joel McCrea was an American actor whose career spanned almost five decades, beginning as a stunt‑man and extra in silent pictures in 1927 and winding down with his final feature, Mustang Country (1976). Born Joel Albert McCrea on 1905‑11‑05 in South Pasadena, California, he grew up delivering newspapers to Hollywood moguls and watching D. W. Griffith film Intolerance on the streets of Los Angeles, experiences that sparked his lifelong fascination with the film industry. Outside the studio, McCrea was a successful rancher and real‑estate investor, developing a 3,000‑acre ranch in Ventura County that produced hundreds of thousands of pounds of beef each year and later becoming a multi‑millionaire philanthropist who donated land for wildlife preserves, YMCA facilities and the Boys & Girls Club. He married actress Frances Dee in 1933, with whom he had three sons—Jody, Peter and David—and remained married until his death on 1990‑10‑20.
