Chance at Heaven 1933

Blacky [Joel McCrea] runs a thriving service station in Silver Beach, Massachusetts, a sunlit summer resort that attracts the wealthy. He dreams of expanding into a chain of stations and plans to marry his girlfriend, Marge Harris [Ginger Rogers], but his attention is drawn to Glory [Marian Nixon], a flirtatious, accident-prone debutante whose snobbish mother, Mrs. Harris [Ann Shoemaker], has just bought a sprawling summer home. An unlikely friendship forms between Glory and Marge, who sees that Blacky is truly in love with Glory and urges him to follow his heart and marry Glory.

Glory and Blacky elope and settle into his bungalow. Glory’s mother weeps, telling her that she has ruined her life. Yet the newlyweds are happy, and Glory soon learns that she is pregnant. Glory’s mother warns that she is still young and will face many challenges. Blacky is ecstatic, but Glory’s mother later persuades him to permit Glory to visit New York for medical care, even though a local obstetrician is available. The visit lasts several months, and Blacky, left behind, learns from Marje that Glory’s trunks are being sent to California, prompting him to rush to the city.

Blacky arrives at the New York apartment to discover that Glory has changed dramatically and now desires a divorce. She rejects his advances and tells him the marriage was a mistake because he married the wrong kind of girl. She wants a life with her friends and her mother. When Blacky presses about the baby, Glory’s mother reveals the shocking truth: Glory had not actually been pregnant.

After the divorce, Blacky returns to his bungalow to find his old armchair in place and Marje preparing his favorite dinner, leaving the door open for a hopeful future.
