Bed of Roses 1933

On a steamboat journey down the Mississippi, two women, Lorry Evans, Constance Bennett and Minnie Brown, Pert Kelton, ply a risky pattern: they coax hapless male admirers into drinking, then rob them. After being released from a Louisiana jail, they head south along the river, their scheme continuing as they drift toward New Orleans.

Lorry steals $60 from a man she entertains in her room, and when confronted by the boat’s captain, she escapes by jumping overboard. She loses the money in the river, only to be rescued by a cotton-barge skipper named Dan, Joel McCrea, and soon after she robs him as well, drawing him into her web of luck and danger. The pair’s quick fortunes and quick schemes set the tone for a story that moves with the current of the river and the twists of desire.

Once in New Orleans, Lorry disguises herself as a newspaper writer to meet Stephen Paige, John Halliday, a powerful publishing magnate she had noticed during her steamboat encounter. She gets Paige drunk, leads him to his home, and the next morning uses blackmail to secure his support, including renting a lavish apartment for her. In a deft reversal of power, she then returns to the cotton barge and repays Dan the money she had taken, and the pair find themselves drawn to one another.

Minnie arrives at Lorry’s apartment, soon followed by Stephen, who threatens to expose her sordid past. The confrontation triggers Minnie’s departure from Stephen, and she does not return to Dan, whom she had agreed to marry. As the tension tightens, Stephen cannot persuade Minnie to change her course, and he comes to a surprising realization: she truly loves Dan. With the help of the now-married Minnie, Stephen helps orchestrate a reunion for Dan and Lorry, sealing their bond and bringing the web of deception toward a fragile, hopeful close amid the shifting currents of their lives.
