Set late in the Civil War, three Confederate soldiers escape a Union prison camp in Missouri and are captured by pro‑Confederate raiders. The raiders force them to serve as outriders—escorts for a civilian wagon train secretly transporting Union gold from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to St. Louis. Their mission is to lead the wagons into a trap, but one soldier’s growing misgivings create tension and threaten the whole scheme.

With the Civil War nearing its end, Will Owen, Joel McCrea, Jesse Wallace, Barry Sullivan and Clint Priest, James Whitmore, escape from a Union stockade in Missouri. Bandit leader and Confederate sympathizer Keeley, Jeff Corey, recruits them to join a wagon train led by Don Chaves, Ramon Novarro, that is carrying gold bullion worth a million dollars from Santa Fe, New Mexico. The plan is to guide the train to a predetermined spot where Keeley and his men will ambush and steal the treasure, ostensibly to fund the Confederate cause.
The men see the robbery as a chance to aid the South and turn a profit. Chaves grows suspicious of their motives but allows them to serve as outriders, riding with the wagon train yet keeping about 200 yards from the others. When Apache attacks erupt, the trio lends their help to repel the raiders, a move that gradually earns them Chaves’s wary trust and a place within the caravan.
The mission becomes more personal as the beautiful widow Jen Gort, Arlene Dahl, draws the attention of both Will and Jesse. Jen is escorting her teenage brother-in-law Roy, Claude Jarman Jr., a eager young man hoping to prove his courage by fighting the Indians beside the seasoned men. Roy’s bravado leads to tragedy: a stampede is triggered and he drowns while attempting to cross a raging river, a moment that weighs heavily on the group and shifts the group’s dynamic.
News arrives that the war is over, and the prospect of the robbery loses its urgency for Will. Yet Jesse remains determined to press on so he and Keeley can split the loot. The truth comes to light when Will confronts Chaves with the planned ambush and reveals Jesse’s intent. A tense confrontation lines the path to the moment of truth, as the wagon train reaches the ambush site.
In a skillful confrontation, the would-be robbers are thwarted and the ambush is defeated. A final gunfight follows, ending with Jesse Wallace’s death and leaving Will and Jen free to pursue a life together. The film closes on a note that blends romance with the hard realities of loyalty and shifting loyalties, underscoring how the end of the war reshapes every character’s ambitions and choices.
