Jim Bennett is a Los Angeles literature professor whose passion for great books clashes with a self-destructive gambling habit that steadily drains his life. Owing a staggering $260,000 to Lee, the ruthless owner of an exclusive, high-stakes underground gambling ring, and another $50,000 to Neville Baraka, a relentless loan shark, he faces a brutal seven-day deadline: pay up or be murdered.

In the classroom, Jim Bennett sparks a tense, awkward debate about literary excellence, using Shakespeare to illustrate how most aspiring writers stumble before reaching true greatness. He zeroes in on his students, calling out elite athletes by name—including Dexter, an emerging tennis star, and Lamar Allen, a collegiate basketball talent who barely pays attention in class but dreams of the NBA. His sermon on perfection grows harsher: if you cannot be exemplary in your field, you might as well not try at all. Of the many faces in the room, he singles out Amy Phillips, Amy Phillips as the one who might carve out a real career in literature, a conviction built on her quiet brilliance and the secret life he’s glimpsed when she works as a waitress at the underground gambling house. A fragile, mutual interest flickers between them, even as he strides through moral gray areas.

After class, Jim Bennett visits his mother, Roberta, at the family’s opulent estate. She refuses to offer more money, leaving him to contemplate borrowing from another loan shark, Frank, Frank, to buy time. When Frank pushes him to admit, “I am not a man,” Jim refuses, choosing a path that will pull him deeper into danger. Desperate, he convinces Roberta to hand over enough cash to cover part of his debts, but he immediately gambles it away, sharing the loss with Amy in a high-stakes casino spree that spirals into chaos.

The danger tightens as Neville Baraka closes in. The loan shark abducts Jim, tortures him, and delivers a cruel ultimatum: persuade Lamar to shave points in a college semifinal by seven or fewer, or Amy will pay the price. Jim’s pride is tested as he navigates this coercive web, realizing that his only chances to escape lie in slick, dangerous gambits rather than valor or virtue.

Back in the dim, smoky rooms of danger, Jim seeks counsel from Frank, who advises a rebranding of his outlook on life: he should seek enough money to build a safe fortress and invest in low-yield security against future losses. The plan crystallizes when Frank lends him $260,000 to pay off Lee, but he warns that failure to repay could crush every person Jim holds dear. The grip of violence tightens as Lee’s enforcers ambush Jim when he tries to secure another stake of $150,000, forcing him to gamble and win as the only path to safety. The odds grow steeper with every move.

Jim channels the pressure into one audacious move: he uses the $150,000 to bribe Lamar into fixing the points. He then sends Dexter to Las Vegas to place a massive bet with the $260,000 he procured from Frank. Lamar’s performance pays off, and Jim uses the winnings to settle Neville’s debt, vehemently denying any knowledge of the large bet in Vegas as the noose loosens.

With both Lee and Frank looming, Jim retreats to a final gambit: a neutral gambling den becomes the stage for a single roulette spin that could clear all debts. If he wins, the debt evaporates and his life reverts to something resembling normal. He wins, and the money is left at the club with a stark declaration: “I am not a gambler.” The confrontation with Frank takes a dark turn as Frank suggests reclaiming the “cream,” but Jim cuts him off with a blunt, “Fuck you.” Driven by adrenaline and a renewed sense of liberty, Jim runs miles through the city to reach Amy’s apartment, broke but finally free from the crushing weight of debt and danger. The story closes on a hard-won, uncertain note, balancing restraint against the temptations of the next gamble.
