Kim Basinger plays Carolyn Carver, a published author whose husband and daughter believe she is working on a new book, when in fact she is gambling away their life savings. She is befriended by Forest Whitaker, who plays Walter, a has-been magician with a gambling habit who entertains casino guests for tips. Clyde Snow, meanwhile, is deeply in debt to gamblers, to the extent that he must ask his younger brother Godfrey, a college basketball star, to shave points at games.
The story crosses between high-stakes gambling, broken trusts, and shifting loyalties. The dangerous Victor—a violent and verbally abusive criminal who may or may not be the front for Ivan, a mob boss no one has actually seen—drives much of the tension. A crippled detective named Brunner is investigating a murder that Victor’s thugs no doubt committed, possibly on Ivan’s orders, and this chase for truth quietly threads through every major decision the characters make. Augie, eager to cut in on Victor’s bookmaking operation, is secretly wearing a wire for Brunner, hoping to trap Victor on tape while pretending to stay on Victor’s good side.
As the web tightens, Carolyn’s home life unravels. Her husband confronts her about the frequent absence and eventually demands a divorce after catching her in the act of gambling. Walter, drawing on information from Victor, receives a tip that a basketball game is fixed, and he decides to risk everything he owns on the outcome, pressing Carolyn to join him in what could be a life-altering wager. Unaware of the full danger, Clyde has told his brother that his debt is paid off, but that repayment story is false. The looming menace of Victor remains, and he has already threatened Clyde’s life if the game goes wrong.
The plot escalates as Victor orders Augie’s murder and attends the pivotal basketball game in person. Clyde’s younger brother delivers a game-winning shot—an act that fills Clyde with a mix of pride and dread, because it places both their lives in immediate jeopardy. After the shot, Clyde leaves the arena only to be followed by Victor’s armed men, who gun him down on a roadside. The victory at the game becomes a ruinous moment for Carolyn, who watches as her finances and family crumble before her eyes.
In the aftermath, Walter goes to Victor’s house with lethal intent, seeking revenge, but Brunner, who has been watching the entire chain of events, ultimately lets Walter go free out of a tempered sense of mercy. Yet the magician’s fate still closes in, and the final turns of the plot reveal that the dangers and deceptions extend beyond what any of them anticipated. The narrative culminates in a stark, double twist: Ivan is real after all, and Detective Brunner is revealed as an accomplice, reconfiguring the entire circle of trust and threat that has threaded through the story from the start.
The cast further expands the atmosphere of danger and drama, with Nick Cannon appearing in the ensemble, adding another layer to the interwoven fates of gambling, crime, and loyalty.
