Jay is an expert gambler, Amitabh Bachchan who has never tasted defeat. This flawless streak draws the attention of the ruthless underworld don Ratan Das, Madan Puri, who hires him to win massive sums from the wealthy and then bend them to his will. Jay’s talent pays off at first, turning a string of wins into leverage, but he unwittingly entangles Nath, a government employee, in a dangerous trap. The crisis peaks when Jay is forced to reveal the blueprints of a top-secret military laser weapon capable of hitting targets within 50 miles, a prize coveted by Saxena, Utpal Dutt.
With law enforcement closing in, Inspector Vijay is assigned to the case—a lookalike of Jay. The two men’s paths converge in Rome, each pursuing a separate mission: Vijay is there to retrieve the evidence against Saxena through a former henchman, and Jay pursues a money-driven plan involving Mala, Neetu Singh, to marry into her wealth.
Mala meets Vijay at the Rome airport and, sensing an opportunity, agrees to accompany him to uncover Saxena’s plans. Meanwhile, Jay crosses paths with Shabnam, Zeenat Aman, a club dancer who mistakes him for Vijay and is sent by Saxena to derail his investigation.
Eventually, Jay and Vijay learn they are long-lost twin brothers. The brothers combine their contrasting skills—Jay’s streetwise gambles and Vijay’s official investigation—to stop Saxena from obtaining the laser weapon and using it to tighten his grip on the underworld.
