Wealthy banker and shipowner William Marlowe and his wife Martha Marlowe dream of marrying off their daughter to the English aristocrat Lord Hurley, but their plans collide with love when their daughter, Mary Carlton, falls for the diligent clerk John Carlton. When Marlowe discovers the romance, he fires John, prompting a desperate decision: John heads west to make his fortune with the hope of returning for Mary, yet she insists on joining him, and they elope.
