On his country estate, Arthur Hilton C. Aubrey Smith regales his dinner guests with tales from decades past about his days as a police officer in Africa. He recalls a case that involved a gang of three murders, a pursuit that began when he tracked them down but was forced into a dangerous capture when they turned the tables on him; yet he managed to talk his way out and, later, to corner them again. In the end, one member of the gang was hanged, while the other two received twenty years in prison. Suddenly, Hilton’s calm recollection is upended: two of the dinner guests, Edward Laverick Warwick Ward and Edward Carter Robert Loraine, are in fact those same men who had once been sent away, and they have sworn revenge. They carry out a brutal plan to kill Hilton and to stage the death as a suicide of the elderly aristocrat. The ruse initially holds, and the local constables appear to accept the suicide story. But Hilton’s nephew, Jimmy Hilton Frank Lawton, and his girlfriend Mollie Cunningham Dorothy Boyd — who is the elder Hilton’s ward — begin to question the tale. Their scrutiny uncovers inconsistencies, leading them to pursue the truth, and their investigation ultimately brings the two murderers to justice.
