Warren Mercer Oates (July 5, 1928 – April 3, 1982), known as Warren Oates, was an accomplished American actor. Born and raised in the tiny rural community of Depoy, Kentucky, Oates kicked off his acting career in the 1950s, establishing himself with guest roles in weekly television Westerns. However, he is best known for his performances in several films directed by Sam Peckinpah, including The Wild Bunch (1969) and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974). Oates also starred as officer Sam Wood in In the Heat of the Night (1967) and as U.S. Army Sergeant Hulka in the military comedy Stripes (1981). He passed away from a heart attack on April 3, 1982, in Los Angeles, California, leaving behind an admirable legacy in the entertainment industry.

An additional significant achievement in Oates' career was his portrayal of John Dillinger in the biopic Dillinger (1973) and his role in the classic New Zealand film Sleeping Dogs (1977). In the 1950s, Oates began his Hollywood journey with guest roles in weekly television westerns.
