A brutal stranger, the Man from Bodie, arrives to terrorize the small town of Hard Times. Aldo Ray plays the Man from Bodie, who ruthlessly kills Fee and Hanson, Fee’s own store founder role and the town undertaker, after raping and killing Fee’s girlfriend, Flo. He also burns down most of the remaining buildings, leaving the settlement scarred and fragile.

In the aftermath, a quiet resolve begins to take root. Henry Fonda as Mayor Will Blue tries to steady the nerves of the survivors, taking in Fee’s young orphaned son, Jimmy. He also persuades Janice Rule to stay on as Molly Riordan, a woman driven by a consuming longing for retribution. A handful of other figures drift into Hard Times — Warren Oates as Leo Jenks, a drifting, capable sharpshooter; John Anderson as Ezra Maple / Isaac Maple, who returns to reopen the general store; and Arlene Golonka as Mae, among others who add new life to the town. Blue’s goal is clear: rebuild a semblance of family and community from the ashes, even as old wounds begin to flare.

Yet Molly despises Blue for not taking a stand against the Man, and she fixates on revenge as the spring thaw approaches. She steers and influences the town’s youngest, Michael Shea as Jimmy Fee, guiding him toward a shotgun in the name of protection. Molly’s charged mood also pushes Leo Jenks into action, and the uneasy balance of the town begins to crack as the threat looms again.

When the Man returns, the town erupts in a tense pursuit. Zar is killed by mistake in a clash that also claims Leo Jenks, and the conflict leaves Blue wounded in the shoulder. The Man, however, runs out of bullets and is eventually driven to a final confrontation with Blue, who fires again and again.

Blue carries the Man’s body back to the door of the small group that remains, hoping to show Molly the proof of what has been done. The moment the villain revives, Molly makes a desperate attempt to finish him, but he seizes her hand. The piercing shout for help brings Jimmy running with his shotgun, and Blue wrests the weapon away to fire the fatal blows. The Man is killed, but Molly is struck in the aftermath, dying in Blue’s arms as the town’s mood seems to lift at last. From her gravesite, Blue and Jimmy witness the town begin to come back to life, a fragile hope blooming again in the shadow of their losses.
