The Harder They Fall 2021

Nat Love is having a seemingly peaceful dinner with his parents when the tranquility is shattered by the arrival of Rufus Buck and his notorious gang. With a brutal efficiency, they murder Nat’s parents and leave an indelible mark on him by carving a cross into his forehead. Fast forward to years later, we find a vengeful Nat, now a hardened outlaw, who has taken his first step towards revenge by eliminating one of Buck’s former accomplices. Meanwhile, alongside his skilled partners, Bill Pickett and Jim Beckwourth, the trio manages to outsmart another gang, successfully stealing their ill-gotten gains.

After the heist, they learn that their haul—which amounts to an impressive $25,000—actually belongs to Buck himself. Determined to settle old scores, Nat travels to reunite with his former lover, Mary Fields, a savvy businesswoman who operates a successful chain of saloons. As Nat’s plans unfold, Pickett delivers crucial intel about their latest heist. However, trouble brews as Buck’s men, led by the fierce Trudy Smith and the swift Cherokee Bill, ambush a train transporting Buck, with the assistance of some corrupt soldiers. They begrudgingly release Buck, who, after dealing with the soldiers, orders a brutal massacre except for one young survivor.

Upon returning to their stronghold in Redwood, Buck reasserts his control over the town, which has devolved into a place of corruption under the leadership of Wiley Escoe. After dispelling Escoe from power, Buck addresses the townsfolk, announcing a need for a hefty $50,000 to rescue the town from further decline, proposing a tax to meet this demand. When a brave man dares to object, Buck ruthlessly silences him, revealing the lengths he will go to maintain his grasp over the townspeople.

In a twist of fate, Marshal Bass Reeves arrives at Fields’ saloon to take Nat into custody, but this arrest is a ruse, cleverly orchestrated by the two men to forestall trouble from Nat’s gang; Reeves feels compelled to put the brakes on Buck’s freedom and knows that Nat is itching for revenge. Although initially skeptical, Nat’s gang, with the brave Fields and her friend Cuffee, insist on joining the hunt for Buck after catching wind of Reeves’ plans. They manage to find Escoe, who relays that Buck has resurfaced in Redwood.

When Fields infiltrates the town under the guise of purchasing Smith’s saloon, she becomes a hostage, suffering abuse at the hands of Smith. In a desperate bid to save her, Nat surrenders and willingly joins her in captivity. However, Buck has other plans for him; he manipulates Nat into robbing a bank in the predominantly White town of Marysville, with the promise of Fields’ release hanging in the balance. Nat and Cuffee bravely execute the heist, choosing to spare lives in the process.

Yet, trusting Buck proves to be a grave mistake. Nat and Reeves come to the grim realization that Buck will likely not release Fields even if they hand over the money. Armed with weapons provided by Escoe, they enact a risky plan to deliver the stolen cash into Redwood, using two carts—one a decoy loaded with explosives. As chaos unfolds, the decoy wagon detonates, claiming several of Buck’s henchmen in the blast.

The tension skyrockets when Nat is confronted by Cherokee Bill, leading to the tragic death of Beckwourth during a duel. As bullets rain down, an all-out firefight erupts, resulting in heavy casualties among Buck’s men and the destruction of the money. In the midst of the chaos, Escoe meets his demise while attempting to sabotage Buck’s hideout. The battle reaches a climax when Fields manages to escape and strategically confronts Smith, emerging victorious in a fierce altercation.

After a series of harrowing encounters, Buck and Nat finally face-off. Instead of a fight, Buck reveals painful truths about their intertwined destinies, detailing his abusive father’s tragic end and how that very situation has irrevocably changed Nat’s life. With a grim finality, Buck states that his deepest revenge was turn Nat into the outlaw he has become. In a moment laden with emotion, Nat avenges his past by taking Buck’s life.

In a somber conclusion, Love and his companions pay their respects to those lost, burying Pickett and Beckwourth beside a grave ominously marked “Nat Love.” As Reeves prepares to report Nat as deceased, Cuffee joins him in law enforcement. In a moment of bittersweet solace, Nat and Fields ride off into the horizon, leaving behind the chaos, while Smith watches from a distance, hinting that not all battles are truly over.
