In Prohibition‑era New York, the flamboyant Jack Diamond and his frail brother begin as jewelry thieves. After a stint in jail, Diamond’s cold ambition pushes him to rob other criminals. In the 1920s, ambitious but small-time thief Jack Diamond Ray Danton and his frail brother Eddie Diamond Warren Oates head to New York City, chasing bigger scores than their past misdeeds. Jack wastes no time drawing trouble into his life as he crosses paths with dance instructor Alice Shiffer Dyan Cannon, charming her to win a date and to swipe a necklace from a jewelry shop. After a stint behind bars, he roams free again and ends up working with Alice at her dance school while on probation, biding his time for a more ambitious payoff.
His luck shifts when he is hired as the bodyguard of the infamous Arnold Rothstein Robert Lowery, who dubs him the nickname Legs. With Rothstein close at hand, Diamond hatches a bold plan to supplant him and seize control of bootleg, narcotics, and gambling operations. The power struggle culminates in Rothstein’s murder, and Legs begins to expand his own protection racket, extracting tribute from various interests in the underworld.
A vacation to Europe with Alice opens Diamond’s eyes to the evolving landscape of New York crime, as newspapers announce a reshaped underworld in the wake of the National Prohibition Act. He returns to America determined to press his advantage, confronting the syndicate and demanding a larger cut from their operations. Personal loyalties fray as he pushes away Alice and leans on Monica, who ultimately betrays him.
The tension erupts when hit men invade his hotel room and end his life with a brutal exchange of gunfire. In the final moments, as his body is carried away on a stretcher, Alice reflects that he was loved by many, but that he loved nobody.
