In the 1920s, ambitious but small-time thief Jack Diamond Ray Danton and his frail brother Eddie Diamond Warren Oates head to New York City, chasing bigger scores than their past misdeeds. Jack wastes no time drawing trouble into his life as he crosses paths with dance instructor Alice Shiffer Dyan Cannon, charming her to win a date and to swipe a necklace from a jewelry shop. After a stint behind bars, he roams free again and ends up working with Alice at her dance school while on probation, biding his time for a more ambitious payoff.
