On a windswept seaside town in Massachusetts, Dr. Guy Montford returns to his roots at the urging of his dying friend, Larry McFie. The town’s hospital administrator, Dr. Sol Kelsey, places the patient under Montford’s personal care, even as Larry’s stern father, Sam McFie, objects to the arrangement. A web of loyalties and hidden agendas begins to unfold as Montford reconnects with faces from the community and confronts the blurred lines between medicine, morality, and personal ambition.

Montford soon crosses paths with Bert Mosley, an unscrupulous attorney who is campaigning to become district attorney and who harbors a secret affair with Fran Walker, the chief nurse under Dr. Kelsey. In the shadow of a motel fire, Montford uncovers the fragile, dangerous secret between Bert and Fran, a discovery that will ripple through every relationship in town. The triangle tightens when Fran falls in love with Montford, and Parker Welk, a reporter who knows about the motel affair, tries to coerce Fran into posing for provocative photographs. Bert Mosley learns of the trouble and physically assaults Parker, who is briefly treated by Montford for his injuries. The story threads deeper into a web of jealousy, blackmail, and professional peril as the town watches the drama unfold.

Complications intensify when Larry begs Montford to end his life rather than endure further pain, and Margaret discovers she is pregnant with Montford’s child from their brief liaison. Unable to bear his friend’s suffering, Montford administers a fatal morphine overdose. Fran realizes what happened and informs Bert, who moves to have Montford arrested. In court, Sam McFie testifies that his son feared for his life in Montford’s care, while Dr. Kelsey testifies that he heard Larry beg for euthanasia. The Prosecuting Attorney presents the case with gravity, but a jury ultimately acquits Montford, allowing him to hope for some future peace with Margaret.
