New York City’s jewel trade centers on a priceless diamond, the Blue Goddess, which must be cut before it can be moved. Bainbridge Gibbons, Reginald Owen, a New York City jeweler, has lined up an expert to cut the gem, but his own cutter, Ambrose C. Park, Red Skelton, strongly urges that he be allowed to handle the cutting.
On a park bench, Ambrose explains to a stranger that he places a newspaper ad once a year on his birthday, hoping to be reunited with the parents who abandoned him as an infant in this very spot.
Ambrose is arrested after getting drunk in public, drawing the attention of Remlick, James Whitmore, a shyster lawyer who offers to help for $400 and becomes more interested when Ambrose suggests he would pay even more if his parents could be located.
A pair of con artists enters the scheme when nightclub dancer Maggie Drumman Cara Williams and her mother Emily Drumman Dorothy Stickney are hired to pretend to be Ambrose’s sister and mother.
After the crooks try to steal the diamond, Ambrose accidentally cuts it in half; he swallows one half, Maggie the other.
As the crooks are taken away, Ambrose and Maggie go to have their stomachs pumped, and a warm romance blossoms as forgiveness follows.
