After a bold robbery, Jake Remy and his gang head for Mexico, only to find a swollen river blocks their route. The only crossing is a ferry barge operated by Travis, who refuses to transport the outlaws and flees with most of the townsfolk. The gang and the remaining townspeople face a tense standoff, each with loved ones stranded on the opposite bank.

After stealing a shipment of silver and weapons, the brutal and unstable Jake Remy and his band of mercenaries must cross a river to flee into Mexico. On the near bank, Travis, a rugged owner-operator of a barge, runs a simple ferry that carries people and goods across the water, while his partner Nola helps move the settlement’s inhabitants and a group of passing settlers to the river’s far side for safety. When Remy and his gang close in, Travis refuses to cross back to pick them up, knowing that Remy and his men will slaughter everyone after they cross. A tense standoff forms as the two sides—Remy and his band on one bank, Travis and the civilians on the other—face off under the hot sun and dusty wind, each waiting for the other to blink.
Remy is advised by Marquette, a Frenchman he trusts, while Travis is greatly aided by Mountain Phil, a steadfast friend who shares his independent spirit, Mountain Phil. Both camps must contend with dissenters who threaten to disrupt plans and fracture loyalties from within, adding an extra layer of danger to the already fragile equilibrium. The river becomes a volatile divider, and the tension steadily escalates toward violence as moves are made, countered, and rethought.
What unfolds is a brutal, bloody battle that reshapes the balance of power on the river. The clash culminates in a final confrontation between the two leaders—the merciless Remy and the stubborn, self-reliant Travis—while the fate of the settlers hanging in the balance hangs by a thread. The sequence threads together fear, courage, and reluctant alliances, painting a stark portrait of survival where every decision could mean life or death for those on both banks.
