Victor Jory was born on November 23, 1902 in Dawson City, Yukon, Canada to American parents and grew up with a physicality honed by his service as the boxing and wrestling champion of the U.S. Coast Guard. After graduating from the Martha Oatman School of the Theater in Los Angeles, he toured with regional troupes and appeared on Broadway, making his Hollywood debut in 1930. Initially cast as a romantic lead, his coal‑black eyes and burly stature soon typecast him as a villain, a shift evident in roles such as Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935) and the treacherous Jonas Wilkerson in Gone with the Wind (1939). Over a five‑decade span he appeared in more than 150 films, wrote two plays, and became a familiar voice on radio, starring in the dramatic series Dangerously Yours (later Matinee Theater). His deep, resonant voice also brought children’s classics to life, most famously narrating Tubby the Tuba, a recording that would later be inducted into the National Recording Registry.

In the television era Jory transitioned smoothly, headlining the syndicated police drama Manhunt (1959‑1961) as Detective Lieutenant Howard Finucane and guest‑starring in dozens of series such as The New Breed, Mannix, and The Rockford Files. He portrayed iconic characters like Injun Joe in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938) and Helen Keller’s father in The Miracle Worker (1962). A lifelong educator, he taught acting at the University of Utah and established the Victor Jory Scholarship for theater students. Honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960, he remained active until his death from a heart attack on February 12, 1982 in Santa Monica. Jory’s legacy endures through his children—director Jon Jory and public‑relations professional Jean Jory Anderson—and the countless villainous roles that defined a golden era of American cinema.
