The Fugitive Kind 1960

Valentine “Snakeskin” Xavier is a guitar-playing drifter who earns his nickname from the distinctive jacket he wears. After a police raid lands him in jail on New Year’s Eve, he heads away from New Orleans to a small town to escape imprisonment. On his 30th birthday, he decides to shed his roaming, party-boy life and seek something steadier, even if the town’s shadows cling to him.

In town, a path opens for him through the kindness of the local sheriff’s wife, Maureen Stapleton as Vee Talbot. She helps him find work in a modest mercantile store run by the embittered Lady Torrance, Anna Magnani, whose husband Jabe Torrance, Victor Jory, lies ill in the apartment above the shop. The town hums with a quiet menace, built on old resentments and a coded history of violence that refuses to stay buried.

The town’s past casts a long shadow: Lady Torrance’s father died in the burning of his vineyard after selling wine to local Black citizens, a bold move that ran afoul of the era’s brutal laws. Into this charged atmosphere wanders Carol Cutrere, a frequently intoxicated outsider Joanne Woodward who knows Valentine from New Orleans and is determined to stake a claim on him. Yet Valentine’s gaze remains drawn to Lady Torrance, a woman with grand ambitions to transform the rundown storefront by adding a beautifully decorated wing—the Lady’s Confectionery—where sweetness might mask the town’s bitter truths.

The layers of loyalty and fear deepen as Sheriff Jordan Talbot, R.G. Armstrong, a friend of Jabe Torrance and the husband of Vee, warns Valentine that he should leave. He makes clear he would not hesitate to remove him by force if he stays. Despite the danger, Snakeskin remains, especially after he learns that Lady is pregnant, a revelation that shifts the balance of power and responsibility in the town.

This fragile balance drives Jabe Torrance to renewed acts of resentment, setting in motion a chain of tragic events. In the moments when Lady and Snakeskin are together in the new Lady’s Confectionery, an arson fire erupts, threatening everything they’ve built. Lady races to help her husband, who is trapped in the apartment above, only to be fatally shot by Jabe on the staircase as flames surge around them. The fire department battles the blaze, and hoses directed at Snakeskin push him back toward the inferno, sealing his fate within the blaze.

In the aftermath, the town’s tension finally spills over into a decisive exit. David Cutrere, John Baragrey, leaves the scene behind in his dilapidated MGA roadster, driving out of town as the flames close in and the community rebuilds its broken lines of trust and memory.
