Not long after, Jackson is elected President of the United States and appoints Houston as governor of Tennessee, signaling a rapid ascent in a volatile era. The borderlands and shifting power dynamics frame Houston’s new role, though the private life that follows soon complicates the public one.

Houston is married to Eliza Allen, but his lifestyle as a politician does not appeal to her, and their marriage fractures under the pressures of public scrutiny. Their divorce becomes a conspicuous scandal for the times, pushing Houston to reconsider his path and responsibilities. In the wake of this strain, he accepts Jackson’s suggestion to become ambassador to the Cherokee, a posting that promises both diplomacy and peril.

On a trip to Washington, DC, to argue that Indians are being mistreated on their own land, Houston meets unexpected companionship. Stephen F. Austin disagrees with Houston’s methods, preferring peaceful negotiations, but when the army of Santa Ana heads toward The Alamo in tremendous numbers, Houston knows no peaceful settlement is possible.
