Spoilers ahead
Janet Steele is a young aviator chasing more than speed in the women’s air derby from Los Angeles to Cleveland. From the outset, she believes the race can be a lifeline, not only for glory but for money to pay for an operation for her brother, Bill Steele, a pilot friend who lies bedridden after a crash. Janet’s determination clashes with the reservations of the legendary, record-setting pilot Ace Boreman, who initially resists lending his fast aircraft. Yet her passion and urgency begin to tilt the balance: she goes so far as to fly away with his plane to prove she can handle it, forcing Ace to confront the truth that her cause—saving her brother’s life—might deserve his support.
