The Loves of Carmen 1948

In early 19th-century Seville, Don Jose Lizarabengoa arrives to begin service as a corporal in the Spanish dragoons. There, he encounters Carmen, a fiery gypsy whose swift hands steal his watch and whose magnetic pull soon consumes him. Carmen’s quick temper erupts when she slashes the face of a peasant woman who insults her, and Jose is ordered to arrest her but lets her escape, a decision that costs him a demotion to guard duty. His commanding officer, the Colonel, also becomes captivated by Carmen, complicating loyalties within the ranks.

A fortune teller warns Carmen that she will be killed by a man she loves deeply. She goes to meet Jose, but the colonel intercepts; he challenges Jose to a duel. In the ensuing struggle, Carmen trips the officer, who falls onto Jose’s sword and dies, leaving Jose hunted for murder.

On the run, Jose and Carmen retreat to the mountains. There, he learns that Carmen is married to Garcia, the ruthless leader of a bandit gang. A knife duel follows, and Garcia is slain. Jose marries Carmen and assumes control of the gang, but the couple’s relationship remains stormy and combustible, filled with jealousy, passion, and constant conflict.

Carmen later travels to Cordoba and becomes the lover of the famed bullfighter Lucas. Meanwhile, Pablo, one of the bandits, betrays Jose to the authorities for a reward. Jose tracks Carmen down, yet she refuses to return to him. She spits on him, and he stabs her; a policeman shoots Jose, mortally wounding him. In the final moment, Carmen and Jose die in each other’s arms.
