After her wealthy husband divorces her, Caroline Carter loses custody of her son Dudley Carter as part of the settlement. With nothing left on the ground, she resolves to reclaim both her fortune and her boy, leaving Chicago for New York to pursue acting and to seek an audience with the theatrical producer David Belasco.
Belasco is wary, offering only a path that keeps her out of his office—a promise to write her a play rather than hire her for a role. Still, as months pass, Caroline presses her case, and he finally grants her a part in a show.
