Florence Shirley, born Florence Isabell Splaine on June 5, 1892, in New York City, was an American actress whose career spanned nearly five decades across both stage and screen. She began her theatrical journey at the remarkably young age of fourteen, making her stage debut in 1906 at Boston's Castle Square Theatre in a Christmas pantomime. Under the guidance of director John Craig, she initially portrayed children's roles and even appeared in boys' parts in Shakespearean productions before transitioning to adult ingenue roles by 1909. As a resident player at Castle Square until September 1911, she built an impressive repertoire that included performances in The School for Scandal, The Evangelist, and The Geisha, earning particular praise for her musical talents. Her Broadway breakthrough came in 1912 when she originated the role of Pearl Williams in Karl Hoschna's The Wall Street Girl, a performance that coincidentally debuted on the same day as the Titanic disaster. Following this success, she starred in the hit play His Majesty Bunker Bean as The Flapper, touring nationally from 1915 to 1916 before bringing the role to Broadway in 1916, which established her as a prominent theatrical presence.

In 1917, Shirley married efficiency engineer A. J. Koehler, and continued her stage work throughout the 1920s, creating roles in notable productions such as Jerome Kern's Oh, Lady! Lady!! (1918) and Apple Blossoms (1920). After a thirteen-year absence from New York stages, she made a final Broadway appearance in Alice in Arms in 1945. Relocating to California, Shirley launched a prolific second career as a film character actress beginning with The Women (1939), where she played Miss Archer. Over the next thirteen years, she appeared in more than fifty films, including Ninotchka (1939), I Take This Woman (1940), and Stars and Stripes Forever (1952), often in small uncredited parts but occasionally in substantial supporting roles. She also contributed to radio, notably as a voice actress in the 1943 Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of The Pride of the Yankees. Shirley passed away in Hollywood, California, on May 12, 1967, at the age of seventy-four, leaving behind a legacy that bridged the golden ages of American theater and cinema.
