An impoverished Polish princess, Victoria Anastasia Wilomirska, falls hard for the charming but penniless Austrian baron, Nicholas Prax, after a dance. She ends her engagement to the wealthy lawyer Hubert Tyler, and the two marry in secret, hoping their union will endure beyond the prying eyes of high society.

To keep themselves afloat, they reinvent themselves as professional house guests, visiting the homes of American nouveau riche who crave a taste of Old World aristocracy. Their secret is exposed by Nicki’s ex-girlfriend, Linda Wayne.

Nicki and Vicki rely on this unlikely routine for income and social presence, but Nicki soon decides that the life of a guest is not enough: he contemplates taking a real job. Linda still pursues him, and Vicki—heartbroken—files for divorce. Attorney Hubert represents her, and the teary Judge Hawkes presides as the divorce is granted.

When Nicki returns from South America, Linda reveals that Vicki and Hubert are now engaged. Nicki tries to win back his lost love by asking Linda to help him land a decorating job with Linda’s rival, who is decorating the new house Hubert is building for Vicki. He starts work with professional polish, yet his lingering feelings surface, and he confesses that he still loves Vicki.

The finale unfolds at a glamorous betrothal party for Hubert and Vicki. The dance floor becomes a battlefield of memories as the couple reconnects to the same waltz that first sparked their romance. The magic returns, and they decide to elope once more, choosing each other over convention and beginning a new life together.
