Countess Tanya Vronsky acts as bait for notorious jewel thief Andre Desormeaux and his slick assistant Polo as they tour through Europe, orchestrating a sequence of glitzy heists with cool precision. The plan hums along smoothly until Tanya unexpectedly falls for their next target, Paul Vernay, a man who seems to embody the life Tanya once dreamed of. Even as she grows fond of him, the gang manages to pull off the theft, and Tanya’s marriage to Paul Vernay follows the job, a glossy ribbon tying off the first chapter of the caper.

The curtain rises again months later in Paris, where Andre Desormeaux makes another bid to lure Tanya back into the game. She pretends to go along with a renewed plan, but her true aim is to sever the old ties for good. She engineers a feint—giving the impression that she has been arrested—only to find that this ruse is not enough to end the danger.

The situation comes to a head when the two accomplices arrive at Tanya’s home during a party, masquerading as guests. They strip the guests of their jewels and slip away into the night, leaving chaos in their wake. Desormeaux tightens his grip with a chilling threat, blackmailing Tanya to reveal her past if a hefty sum of 200,000 francs does not change hands.

As the theft is uncovered, Paul Vernay and Tanya race after the culprits in their car. Along the way, Paul uncovers the truth about Tanya’s background, and in a moment of forgiveness, he chooses to stand by her. Meanwhile, Polo experiences a sudden change of heart and returns to Tanya’s house with the jewels, handing them back to the couple. Desormeaux, sensing the turning of the tide, boards a ship bound for America, leaving the future of the heist unresolved.

Back in the Vernay mansion, Tanya rises to the occasion by entertaining her guests with a licensed flourish—an elegant dance inspired by a famous ballet, a nod to the world she’s left behind and a bridge to the life she’s chosen with Paul. The final gambit unfolds as Polo, still carrying a briefcase that supposedly holds the jewels, boards the ship once more. In a final act of misdirection, he pretends the case remains full but, in a calculated move, drops it into the water, leaving the fate of the jewels—and the couple’s trust—in question, even as forgiveness and a fragile happiness settle over the scene.
