Norma Varden: Movies & Box Office

Norma Varden Shackleton (20 January 1898 – 19 January 1989) was an English‑American actress whose career spanned almost five decades of stage and screen. Born in London to the daughter of a retired sea captain, she was a child prodigy who first trained as a concert pianist in Paris and performed throughout England before turning to acting. She honed her craft at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, making a debut as Mrs Darling in Peter Pan and quickly becoming a protégé of actress Kate Rorke. Varden's West End breakthrough came with The Wandering Jew in 1920, and she was a regular with the Aldwych Theatre company from 1929 to 1933, appearing in everything from Shakespearean dramas to farcical comedies. Her polished diction and aristocratic bearing landed her numerous roles as haughty upper‑class characters in British films, a niche that would later define her Hollywood persona.

When World II broke out, Varden emigrated to the United States, where she enjoyed a prolific film career, often cast as a dignified society lady or crisp housekeeper. Notable screen appearances include Casablanca (1942), The Major and the Minor (1942), Strangers on a Train (1951), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), and Witness for the Prosecution (1957). She is perhaps best remembered as the efficient housekeeper Frau Schmidt in the beloved musical The Sound of Music (1965). Varden also made frequent television appearances, most memorably as Harriet Johnson on Hazel and as the snobbish neighbor Mrs Benson on I Love Lucy. After becoming a naturalised U.S. citizen on 28 January 1949, she continued working until her final role in Doc (1969). She died of heart failure in Santa Barbara, California, the day before her 91st birthday, and is interred at Santa Barbara Cemetery. She never married and had no children.
