Roy Rogers, born Leonard Franklin Slye on November 5, 1911 in Cincinnati, Ohio, rose from humble tenement roots to become the legendary King of the Cowboys. His early years were marked by a nomadic childhood on a houseboat and a farm in Ohio, where he learned to yodel, play mandolin, and ride horses. After moving to California during the Great Depression, he entered the entertainment world through local radio, forming the early version of the Sons of the Pioneers. By 1934 the group recorded “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” and Rogers soon caught the attention of Republic Pictures, which rechristened him Roy Rogers. He quickly became a matinee idol, starring in nearly 90 motion pictures and hosting the popular The Roy Rogers Show (1951‑1957). His signature song “Happy Trails,” co‑written by his second wife Dale Evans, closed each episode with a warm farewell that resonated with generations of fans.

Beyond the silver screen, Rogers pioneered celebrity merchandising, securing rights to his name, likeness, and voice, leading to a vast array of products from action figures to the Roy Rogers restaurant chain. He was a two‑time inductee of the Country Music Hall of Fame—first with the Sons of the Pioneers (1980) and later as a solo artist (1988)—and earned three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for film, television, and radio. A devoted family man, he married Grace Arline Wilkins in 1936 (her death in 1946) and then Dale Evans in 1947; together they adopted and raised eight children. Rogers remained active in music, film, radio, and charitable work until his death from heart failure on July 6 1998, leaving an indelible imprint on American pop culture and the Western genre.
