Heart of the Golden West 1942

In Cherokee City, Ross Lambert doubles the rates to ship cattle to market, squeezing the local ranchers. Roy Rogers steps in to lend a hand and reaches out to the owner of a steamboat, Colonel Silas Popen, to explore moving cattle by water.

To set the stage for a potential partnership, the ranchers roll out a warm welcome for Mary Lou Popen and her father, while James Barabee, head of the Cattleman’s Association, sends a telegram claiming Popen hates everything western. The message is intercepted by Lambert, which creates an uneasy first impression.

Lambert replies with a calculated bluff: a loud saloon brawl intended to terrify Popen. The noise spooks the horses pulling Popen’s wagon and triggers a dangerous runaway. Roy’s intervention helps, saving Popen and Mary Lou, but Popen remains wary and refuses to commit to shipping cattle.

Mary Lou refuses to wait for luck and takes matters into her own hands, directing the ranchers to round up the cattle and bring them to Barabee’s ranch. Meanwhile, Lambert’s men set fire to the steamboat, and as the blaze spreads, his gang rustles every head of cattle. Popen has fallen into a well on the ranch and overhears Lambert plotting the crime with his men.

When Popen is rescued, he reveals that the cattle have been moved under a waterfall to a swamp. The ranchers reclaim the stock and arrest Lambert and his men. Mary Lou is saved from Lambert’s kidnapping, and Popen signs a contract agreeing to transport the cattle, paving the way for a workable shipping arrangement.
