Frontier Pony Express 1939

Set at the dawn of the American Civil War in 1861, the Pony Express carries crucial messages across a nation torn by conflict. Brett Langhorne, a Confederate secret agent, operates undercover by purchasing the town newspaper in St. Joe and moves through the area with his sister as they try to win support for their cause. They cross paths with Roy Rogers, a steadfast Pony Express rider who rescues his sister from a runaway stagecoach, earning a reputation for courage in the eyes of the town. Langhorne tries to persuade the rider to work for the Confederacy for money, but the rider remains loyal to the mission and to the men and women who rely on the mail.

On the political front, Senator Calhoun Lassiter is introduced as a sharp, calculating figure who seeks to pull California into the Confederacy and then rule it as an independent “Republic of the Pacific.” To advance this scheme, Lassiter orders Luke Johnson and his gang to seize critical documents moving through St. Joe by Pony Express, using force if necessary. The rider fights to protect the documents, unaware that the outlaws are backed by Confederate interests. The plot’s true dimensions come to light when Lassiter and Langhorne clash: Lassiter shoots Langhorne in the back, and Langhorne, in his dying moments, confesses the whole plan to the rider.

Armed with this confession, Rogers, the Pony Express officials, and the cavalry mount a coordinated response to stop Lassiter and Johnson. Their combined efforts bring the conspiracy to an end and restore order to the frontier routes as the war rages on.
