Winds of the Wasteland 1936

In 1861, John Blair, John Wayne and his partner Larry Adams, Lane Chandler, are dismayed when the telegraph ends the Russell & Waddell Pony Express, forcing them to rethink their future. Eager to put their horse-riding skills to work, they decide to start a stagecoach transportation service and head to Buchanan City to seek opportunities. There, they ask local magnate Cal Drake, Douglas Cosgrove, if he would sell them a stagecoach. Instead, Drake offers them a franchise from his own line that runs all the way to the bustling Crescent City.

Upon arriving at Crescent City, Blair and Adams quickly realize they’ve been swindled: Crescent City is essentially a ghost town. The only residents are the mayor, Rocky O’Brien, [Lew Kelly], and Dr. William Forsythe, [Sam Flint], Drake’s ex-partner. O’Brien is oddly pleased to have two new residents and a fresh stagecoach line, and he hints that Drake is as crooked as a snake. Blair protests that there are no customers to transport, but O’Brien suggests a cunning plan: there will be a town-wide contest in the coming days where the fastest team will win a $25,000 government contract to deliver mail to the area. Blair decides to enter the race, while Drake is the only other rival left in the field.

Blair travels to Buchanan City to register for the race. The only other entrant is Drake, whose malign influence has already rattled the competing lines. A street confrontation with one of Drake’s henchmen ends with Blair successfully gaining the upper hand. A female passenger headed for Crescent City, Barbara Forsythe, the daughter of Dr. Forsythe, is not impressed by Blair’s street-fighting display. Barbara, who is traveling with the stage to Crescent City, becomes a pivotal figure in the unfolding events.

On the journey, the passenger reveals her identity to Blair: she is the daughter of Forsythe, and Forsythe himself has not told her how empty Crescent City is, while she has not told him she’s coming. The caravan encounters more tension when a settler’s wagon arrives with a sick child. Forsythe declares the child needs rest, and O’Brien proclaims that Crescent City’s future hinges on growth — including a new schoolteacher, which Barbara is set to become, much to her surprise.

Blair also meets a telegraph crew and saves them from poisoning after drinking from a tainted water hole. In gratitude, the crew agrees to lay the telegraph line through Crescent City instead of Buchanan City, provided Blair can recruit fifty laborers to build it. Blair publicly announces in Buchanan City that he’ll pay $10 per day to laborers, stimulating a strong and enthusiastic response from the townspeople.

Drake, furious that Blair has turned his con into a competing business, tries to hire him to haul a gold shipment to Sacramento. If Blair can deliver the gold, Drake will deduct $1,000 from the original loan. Drake plots to ambush Blair by manipulating the escort Blair would take. Blair outsmarts the setup, delivers the gold, and, when Drake hesitates, forces him at gunpoint to honor the $1,000 payment on the loan.

Back in Crescent City, Forsythe is thrilled by the town’s budding prosperity, but Barbara remains wary that it may not last. When Adams’ stage returns to Crescent City, Blair learns that Adams has been wounded in an ambush. Forsythe examines Adams and reveals the bullet is lodged near Adams’ spine, making a delicate operation essential to saving his life. Forsythe admits he’s not confident enough to perform the procedure, but Barbara and Blair urge him to try, and the operation is a success.

The night before the race, Drake’s men set fire to the barn where Blair’s stagecoach is kept. Blair and O’Brien thwart the arsonists, saving the coach and its horses. Blair shoots at the intruders, killing one of them. Drake issues a warrant for Blair’s arrest, which the sheriff executes. Forsythe bails Blair out of jail just after the race begins, with O’Brien driving the Crescent City stage. Blair closes the gap, but Drake remains in control from the rear. Despite multiple attempts at bushwhacking, Blair narrowly wins the race and secures the $25,000 government prize, bringing the story to a triumphant, hard-won close.
