In the Old West, Bill Underwood, Tim Holt, rejects his father Dave Underwood, Gordon De Main, and chooses the life of a cowhand over taking charge of his family’s Kellogg Stage Line. On the road to Durango, Bill rides with his loyal friends Smokey Ryan, Ray Whitley, and Whopper Hatch, Lee ‘Lasses’ White, who stand by him through rough trails and sudden threats. Back in town, Mr. Kellogg, Charles R. Phipps, and his daughter Nancy Kellogg, Luana Walters, weigh a tense deal that could redefine the family business.

Dave’s lawyer, Steve Farley, Archie Twitchell, emerges as the architect of a crooked negotiation, misrepresenting offers and quietly corrupting the stage drivers to tilt the contract toward Farley’s interests. Bill uncovers Farley’s scheme to plant stolen mail on him, a trap designed to discredit the Underwoods and weaken Nancy’s leverage. Farley even spins tales that Bill is an Underwood spy, driving a wedge between Bill and Nancy while pressing his advantage in the mail contract.

To stay close to the action, Bill adopts the alias “Dawson” and signs on as a driver for the Kelloggs. He moves among the crew, gathering evidence of Farley’s machinations and safeguarding the mail route from sabotage.
