Jane Alexander, born as Jane Quigley on October 28, 1939, is a celebrated American-Canadian actress and author. She is noted for her roles in theatre, film, and television, earning her a Tony Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and nominations for four Academy Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. Throughout her illustrious career, she served as the chairwoman of the National Endowment for the Arts from 1993 to 1997. Alexander's breakthrough came with the Tony Award-winning performance in the Broadway production of The Great White Hope in 1969. Her movie breakthrough came with the same play, earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Other notable performances include her roles in All the President's Men (1976), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), and Testament (1983). Jane Alexander has been acting since 1963 and remains active in the industry. She is respected for her ability to take on challenging roles, such as playing Eleanor Roosevelt in Eleanor and Franklin (1976). Alexander was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, where she developed a love for acting. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York, before embarking on a successful acting career. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed her chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts. After her stint in politics, Jane returned to acting.
