Gabriel Byrne: Movies & Box Office

Gabriel James Byrne (born 12 May 1950) is an Irish actor who began his acting journey in the Focus Theatre before joining London's Royal Court Theatre in 1974. Byrne's screen debut was in the Irish drama serial The Riordans and the spin-off show Bracken. His film repertoire includes Excalibur (1981), Lionheart (1987), Miller's Crossing (1990), Little Women (1994), and Dead Man (1995). He co-wrote The Last of the High Kings (1996) and produced In the Name of the Father (1993). He exhibit passion for Broadway work, earning two nominations for the Tony Award for lead role in the plays A Moon for the Misbegotten (2000), and Long Day's Journey into Night (2016).

In TV, he received nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for his role as Paul Weston in the HBO drama series In Treatment (2008–2010), for which he also received a Golden Globe Award. He maintained interest in his language by writing the first television drama in Irish, Draíocht, when Ireland's national Irish-language station started broadcasting in 1996. Away from acting, Byrne has worked in archaeology and had taught Spanish and history at Ardscoil Éanna in Crumlin. He later joined the Performing Arts Course at Roslyn Park College in Sandymount. Byrne is vocal about the life abuses he experienced from priests during his childhood. He recently published a memoir, Walking with Ghosts, and continues to act, even venturing into a one-man show based on his memoir.
