He takes up residence in the house that had been previously owned by the painter’s two sisters, a detail that adds a ghostly history to his assignment. In this austere setting, he begins a romance with a new, beautiful schoolteacher, Francesca, Francesca Marciano.

As he works, Stefano hears whispers among the townspeople about the painter’s deranged methods and choices.
