The Mass-Observation project, begun in 1937 by Charles Madge, a poet and journalist, and Tom Harrisson, an anthropologist, aimed to “record the voice of ordinary people.” To achieve this, they recruited volunteer observers who would report their experiences, and in 1939 they invited members of the public to send in accounts of their daily lives. Among the roughly 500 participants who answered that call was Nella Last, whose weekly diaries form the core narrative of the work.

The diaries submitted to Mass-Observation are written as a running record of a life in flux, often penned in pencil and headed simply by the life detail “Housewife, 49”—the age Last had when she began the correspondence. edited versions of Nella Last’s diary have been published to bring the private voice of this housewife to a broader audience. The book Nella Last’s War, edited by Richard Broad and Suzy Fleming, first appeared in 1981 and was later reissued by Profile Books in 2007. This volume underpins the subsequent work, as Housewife, 49 is effectively based on Last’s wartime diary entries and covers the years 1939 to 1945, placing her experiences within the broader context of the war years. A continuation of the story came with Nella Last’s Peace, published in 2009, which adds post-war entries to complete a fuller arc of life beyond the immediate conflict. A final volume, Nella Last in the 1950s: Further diaries of Housewife, 49, released in 2010, includes additional material not published in Nella Last’s War, extending the narrative into the early postwar era.

Throughout the programme, the staff of Mass-Observation are shown reacting to and sometimes moved by Last’s letters, highlighting the power of one voice to illuminate a community’s experience. Over the course of the diaries, Last moves from an introverted, isolated existence within a difficult marriage to becoming an increasingly outward-facing figure, whose voluntary work during wartime helps her become a backbone of the local community. The collection preserves a detailed record of personal experience during a pivotal period, offering future readers a window into how ordinary life intersected with extraordinary history.
