Marcello Mastroianni (1924‑09‑26 – 1996‑12‑19) was an Italian actor whose career spanned more than five decades, making him one of the most iconic male performers of the 20th‑century. Born in the small village of Fontana Liri in the Lazio province, he grew up in Turin and Rome, the son of carpenter Ottone Mastroianni and Ida Irolle. He first appeared on screen at the age of fourteen in the uncredited role of an extra in Marionette (1939) and continued to take minor parts throughout the 1940s.
