Lee Marvin

Lee Marvin (born Lamont Waltman Marvin Jr. on February 19, 1924 – August 29, 1987) was an iconic American film and television actor. Known for his distinctive bass voice and prematurely white hair, Marvin made a deep impression in the art of portraying hardboiled "tough guy" characters. Although initially typecast as the villain, Marvin later gained prominence for embodying anti-heroes, most noteworthy in the television series M Squad (1957–1960). His cinematic legacy includes significant roles in a plethora of films like Charlie Strom in The Killers (1964), Rico Fardan in The Professionals (1966), Major John Reisman in The Dirty Dozen (1967), Ben Rumson in Paint Your Wagon (1969), Walker in Point Blank (1967), and the Sergeant in The Big Red One (1980). His dual role in the Western film Cat Ballou (1965) won him several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actor. By embracing influential anti-hero roles, Marvin challenged Hollywood stereotypes and left an enduring mark on the film industry.

During World War II, Marvin served in the United States Marine Corps and took part in 21 amphibious assaults on Japanese-held islands. His military service significantly influenced his acting career, often assisting in realistically portraying infantry movement, arranging costumes and the use of firearms. His personal life was filled with remarkable instances, like changing the legal face of alimony in California and getting involved in a controversial community property case. Despite his heavy smoking and drinking habits, Marvin's vibrant screen presence and indelible performances garnered him extensive popularity worldwide, marking him as one of the most memorable figures of Hollywood.
