The Missouri Traveler 1958

Biarn Turner, Brandon De Wilde, a 15-year-old runaway from the Eatondale Orphan Asylum bound for Florida in the post-World War I era of 1926, finds a chance ride into the rural Missouri town of Delphi with the wealthy landowner Tobias Brown, Lee Marvin. In Delphi, after a vivid scene in the town square that pulls in most of the townsfolk, Biarn meets Doyle Magee, Gary Merrill, a crusty newspaper man.

The two men—Brown and Magee—are drawn to this polite, mature youth, but they offer him strikingly different kinds of mentorship. Brown offers warmth and quiet care, while Magee’s approach can feel harsher and more searching. As Biarn navigates their competing attentions, the true motives behind each man’s behavior gradually become clear to him.
