The mood is both celebratory and wary, because Flint plans a bold move that will set the course for the season: he organizes a hunting brigades into the beaver-rich Blackfoot territory, assembling horses and recruiting trappers, despite voiced concerns from his Scottish ally and former trading partner, Brecan, who lives among the Blackfoot and warns him that the land truly belongs to them.
