The Wild Country 1970

In the late 1880s, Jim Tanner, Steve Forrest, and his wife Kate Tanner, Vera Miles, relocate from Pittsburgh to a Wyoming farm with their sons Virgil Ron Howard and Andrew Clint Howard. They discover the ranch is in a troubling state of disrepair, and the family quickly learns that the land’s life-sustaining water runs through the property of the powerful rancher Ab Cross, Morgan Woodward, leaving Jim at his mercy. Ab is stubborn and uncooperative, allowing his cattle to graze on Tanner land, and Jim’s attempt to threaten a court showdown is met with laughter and the blunt declaration that there are no laws to govern their frontier, a world where might seems to trump right.

The tension deepens when Ab learns that Jim intends to contact the marshal in distant Cheyenne. Mann, who arrives with a court order demanding that Ab open the dam and restore the water to the Tanner property. The promise of legal remedy briefly rekindles hope, yet the night that follows is dense with peril as the Tanners celebrate a fragile victory. Their barn suddenly ignites, and in a harrowing sequence Ab, mounted on horseback, shoots Jim, shoves Kate aside, and squares off for another deadly strike. Before he can finish the act, Virgil intervenes and shoots Ab Cross dead, ending the rancher’s reign of intimidation. After Ab’s fall, his men express remorse and vow to repair the damage they caused, signaling a return to a sense of community and accountability. With the immediate threat dissolved, the Tanner family stands united, free to continue their life as ranchers in a landscape that has tested them but ultimately tempered their resilience, a frontier saga propelled by stubborn faith, familial love, and quiet courage.
