During World War II in Italy, American G.I. Philip Cass meets a local woman named Teresa Russo. Philip is a sensitive, thoughtful young man who is bullied by his commanding officer for his perceived softness, but Teresa’s warmth and practicality give him a sense of belonging. She barters with American servicemen for precious food supplies, and her resourcefulness becomes a lifeline for him and others in the chaos around them. Their connection deepens as they share quiet moments amid the rubble of a war-torn landscape, and their budding affection grows into a love that feels both brave and fragile.

After the war, Philip Cass tries to court Teresa, and they marry in the bombed-out ruins of her village’s church. They begin their married life in New York City, moving in with his overbearing mother, Clara Cass. Philip battles post-traumatic stress, struggles to hold a job, and his mood swings are intensified by the tense home environment. When Teresa reveals she is pregnant, fear and reluctance push him to tell her to leave.

It’s a turning point when his Veterans Affairs counselor, Frank, helps him see a path toward healing. With support from Frank, Philip gains the courage to face his memories and to stand up to his mother. The couple begins to rebuild their life together, and after the birth of their child, they move into their own apartment as a family.
