Harper is a bank robber posing as a traveling salesman. He arrives in Bradenville, soon joined by the sadistic, benzedrine-addicted Dill and the meticulous Chapman. The trio’s plan to rob the town’s bank unsettles the community and drags a web of personal tensions into the open.

Boyd Fairchild is the self-pitying manager of the local copper mine, troubled by his philandering wife even as he loves her. He contemplates an affair with Linda Sherman, though his devotion to his wife remains real. Shelley Martin enjoys a seemingly happy home life, but his son Steve Martin believes he is a coward for not serving in World War II, having stayed behind to manage the mine for the war effort.

Harry Reeves, the bank manager, is a timid figure whose peeping tendencies complicate life, and Elsie Braden the librarian resorts to larceny to escape debts. As the robbers close in, Reeves is wounded in a gunfight and Mrs. Emily Fairchild is slain in the crossfire.

Meanwhile, Martin is held hostage on a farm with an Amish family. With the pacifist father Stadt guiding them, the family and hostages confront the criminals, and Stadt’s beliefs are pushed to the limit when he is forced to drive a pitchfork into the back of Dill to save a wounded Martin. In the aftermath, Martin becomes a hero to Steve, and Linda consoles Fairchild as he mourns his wife.
