Professional assassin Jeff Heston and his lover Vanessa Shelton are enjoying a quiet holiday in the Virgin Islands when their vacation is torn apart by a ruthless ambush. The attack is led by Jeff’s former partner, Jerry Coogan, and the onslaught ends with Jeff being shot and left for dead while Vanessa appears to escape with Coogan. Jeff is captured and jailed for the shooting, and he faces a visit from Steve, a lawyer who works for crime boss Al Weber, Jeff’s old boss. In a cool, restrained exchange, Jeff refuses to name Vanessa as a potential witness, sacrificing any chance at exoneration to protect her—or so he thinks.
Months pass. After a parole, Jeff heads to New Orleans and immediately encounters Weber’s thugs, who want him back in the family business. He refuses, insisting he’s retired. With the aid of Killain, his old associate and a morally compromised hitman, Jeff begins quietly tracking Coogan down to a motor race, where Coogan is driving. He rigs the scene so Coogan crashes in a fiery wreck, taking care to disappear without leaving a trace. The act marks a turning point: Jeff returns to Vanessa, and they reconnect at a debutante ball, where the distance between them is palpable.
At first Jeff treats Vanessa with cold anger, blaming her for not disclosing that she had been Coogan’s mistress and for leaving him for dead. Vanessa defends herself, explaining she acted from fear and wants to rebuild what they had. The couple plans to get away, but Weber’s henchmen arrive with incriminating photos showing Jeff’s supposed involvement in Coogan’s death, and Jeff is pulled back into the orbit of Weber’s expanding, semi-legitimate empire. Weber offers him a ruthless new deal: become his hatchet man in a vast criminal enterprise, now financed and protected by legitimate fronts. Steve counters with an equally tempting offer in Venezuela, but Jeff refuses both. Weber, in a shocking revelation, also discloses that Vanessa is his wife, the two having eloped while Jeff was imprisoned.
Confronting Vanessa at her hidden wetlands hideaway, the couple’s heated confrontation turns intimate, and they drift into the woods. Vanessa pushes for a quick, painless end if Jeff intends to kill her, and he relents—only to find themselves ambushed by Killain. Jeff shoots Killain dead and realizes Weber must have targeted Vanessa. The conflict escalates to Weber’s office, where they destroy the negatives that could expose Weber’s operation. After Vanessa leaves the room, Weber taunts Jeff with the suggestion that Vanessa has been playing them both, and that betrayal is coming. Jeff doubts him, but Weber’s certainty proves costly: he kills Weber in a final, brutal confrontation.
Still, the trap isn’t over. When Jeff reaches their planned rendezvous, Vanessa is gone and the police close in. Realizing he’s been maneuvered into a deadly trap, he narrowly escapes capture. The truth finally comes out: Vanessa and Steve had engineered Weber’s downfall and intended to seize control of his organization, using Jeff as a pawn in their larger plan. As they ascend in a gleaming new skyscraper, Jeff locates Steve on a rooftop and shoots him with a sniper rifle from across the street. Vanessa cries out for mercy with the fateful line, > make it painless, < and Jeff finishes her with a single headshot. The rooftop becomes a war zone as cops close in, and Jeff provokes a rookie officer into shooting him, bringing the tragic, taut saga to a brutal close.
