Tommy Noonan

Tommy Noonan (born Thomas Patrick Noone on 1921-04-29 in Bellingham, Washington) was a versatile American entertainer whose career spanned over three decades, encompassing acting, comedy, screenwriting, and producing. He entered the performing world in 1934 alongside his half‑brother, the noted actor John Ireland, debuting on a New York experimental stage and later appearing together in three feature films, including the classic I Shot Jesse James (1949). After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Noonan broke into Hollywood with an uncredited role in George White's Scandals (1945) and quickly built a reputation as a reliable character actor, appearing in both high‑profile productions and lower‑budget B movies. His most memorable performances include the nerdy fiancé Gus Esmond in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) opposite Marilyn Monroe and the talented musician Danny McGuire in the acclaimed A Star Is Born (1954) alongside Judy Garland. In addition to his film work, Noonan formed a comedy duo with Peter Marshall in the late 1940s, delivering joint acts on television, in nightclubs, and in films such as Starlift (1951) and Swingin' Along (1962). The partnership was intermittent, allowing both men to pursue solo projects, but it highlighted Noonan's comedic timing and collaborative spirit. By the early 1960s, he shifted toward producing, writing, and directing, notably creating the erotic comedy 3 Nuts in Search of a Bolt (1964) and producing the western Cottonpickin' Chickenpickers (1967). His career was cut short when a brain tumor led to his death on 1968-04-24 in Los Angeles, just days before his 47th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of varied performances and contributions to mid‑century American cinema.
