In 1864, during the Civil War, a band of Confederate prisoners escapes from a Union stockade at Plattsburgh, New York, not far from the Canada–US border. They press north toward Montréal, Quebec, plotting a bold cross-border raid into St. Albans, Vermont to rob its banks in hopes of replenishing the Confederate treasury and to burn several buildings as revenge for Sherman’s March to the Sea. The mission is led by Major Neal Benton, [Van Heflin], a careful strategist who must balance danger with a growing personal doubt about the morality of their actions. The team splits their efforts: some hide out in an abandoned barn, while others move through the town disguised as traveling peddlers, quietly weaving themselves into daily life so no one suspects the coming assault.
