In the 1870s Arizona town of Forge River, a powerful cattle baron, Vince Carden, is estranged from his brother, Paul Cardenas. The two men share a Mexican heritage, yet Vince has renounced that part of his identity. He harbors a deep distrust of Native Americans, paying out bounties on Indian scalps and quietly using the chaos to snap up cheap land while the region bleeds. Paul, by contrast, is rudderless, haunted by a past romance that ended in tragedy, a closeness that some blame him for, even as he searches for a direction in life.
A wagon train joined by Paul is ambushed by braves in retaliation for a raid that Vince helped foment. Among the survivors is a woman returning home from her education back east, a stark reminder of the cost of the town’s endless feuds. The attack unsettles Forge River and exposes the fragility of its peace.
Vince then schemes to murder a negotiator from Washington, DC, who has arrived to broker a land-sharing arrangement with the Indians, a crime meant to shift blame onto the Native community. Paul witnesses the assault but, when the townspeople convene to decide how to respond, he refrains from explicitly revealing what he saw, leaving others to piece together the truth.
Against this backdrop, Vince pushes for an all-out assault on a largely defenseless Indian village. The sheriff, who is on Vince’s payroll, and the fort’s commander go along with the plan, deepening the town’s moral rot. The massacre that follows sparks a brutal and massive Indian counterattack on Forge River, driven by a perception that Vince’s machinations are at the heart of the region’s misery. The retaliation is swift and relentless, forcing the town to confront the consequences of greed, prejudice, and a cycle of violence that no one seems able to stop.
